Wireless sensor networks (WSNs), distributed network of small and low-cost wireless devices have become more pervasive in daily day. My thesis work, therefore, focuses on an application of WSNs. With the topic “Wireless sensor networks and Intelligent transport system”, this thesis includes three main parts: studying history, protocols, standards and some applications of WSN, especially intelligent transport and traffic control system applications; researching Zigbee/ IEEE 802.15.4 specification, and also configuring a wireless network system based on ZigBee/ IEEE 802.15.4 specification devices . In this thesis, first of all, the history, protocols, standards of wireless sensor networks are introduced. In addition, some WSN applications with the main concentration on intelligent transport systems are presented. The second part provides a breakthrough in IEEE 802.15.4 LR-WPAN standard and ZigBee specification. This part informs IEEE 802.15.4/ ZigBee specification in details, including their characteristics, components, network topologies, and protocol architecture. Finally, base on the above knowledge, I configure a wireless network system comprising six nodes due to ZigBee specification. This system is used to detect, and then display traffic signs and message notification on vehicles monitor.en_US
