An exploration of passengers' preferences for choosing bus as their means of transport

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out why do citizens of HCMC prefer private to public transport and what needs to be improved to increase usage rate of public transport. Accordingly, in-depth interviews with 20 passengers have been conducted on bus 109 and bus 152. A qualitative approach has been used to address purposes proposed. Final results of research shows that there are 11 factors affecting choice of passengers for choosing bus as their means of transport. Subsidize should continuously provide however the way of providing subsidize should change to place competitive factor in and in turn increase usage rate. There are many expectations of passengers and followed by suggestions for improving usage rate. Unfortunately, the prominent limitations of this research are the small sample size and subjective results due to drawbacks of qualitative approach.
