Background Intravenous (IV) therapy is extensively used in hospital treatments for infusion of liquid substances directly into a vein for electrolyte imbalances correction, medications delivery, and blood transfusions. If a patient is not received a proper monitoring during infusion procedure, an air embolism can occur along with other dangerous complications which are hazardous to their safety. Objective To prevent this situation, a design of a wireless intravenous injection monitoring system to monitor low-level liquid of plastic IV drip set, heart rate, and temperature of the patient throughout infusion process procedure for abnormalities detection is proposed. Methods The flexible capacitance-based sensor is used to detect liquid of IV bag in this proposed system. The reference of researches and developments of the coplanar capacitor mainly bases on the results from the simulation performed in a previously conducted analysis and Texas Instrument’s technical documents accompanied with FD1004 capacitance to digital converter (CDC). The system consisted of three sensors which are the low-level liquid detection sensor, heart rate, and temperature. The flexible capacitive sensor was fixed on the bottom side of IV bag to measure the changing in capacitance of liquid during the fluid administration. The measured signal from the flexible capacitive sensor was converted into digital value by a FDC1004 capacitance-digital-converter. ATmega2560 takes role as a controller module to receive, process, transmit data as well as control system operation including warning function. In addition, MQTT messaging protocol is used in this system for wireless data transmission to the server using ESP8266 WiFi module which is then visualized on a web page for remote monitoring by caregivers. Results The proposed flexible capacitive sensor is able to attach on the plastic IV drip bag completely and is shown a good performance in the basic experiment of low-liquid level detection in the plastic IV drip bag. The system functions properly in collecting sensors data and controlling on-sight UI visualization and giving timely warning. It is also able to send the measured data to the server by the wireless method using ESP8266 WiFi module. The website displays accurate measurement of patient and can give an alarm immediately when there is an abnormality happens. Conclusions The targets mentioned in the objectives section of this thesis have been achieved. This is the first step which can be seen as a basic guideline for constructing complete wireless intravenous injection monitoring system. Due to time limitation the project, suggestions for future system development were made.
