Needs satisfaction as a way used to motivate employees: The case study of Phuc Tien company
Abstract
From the unusual case of Phuc Tien company that the boss have tried to motivate his employees with some preferential policies such as increasing the salary, giving high bonus at the end of the year, but the employees seem not have motivation to work better; this studied apply need-based motivation theories to suggest Phuc Tien company a way used to motivate employees - needs satisfaction. Then, the research conceptual framework is built up with eight needs (e.g. salary, job security, promotion, interesting of work, working condition, recognition, relationship with peers and relationship with supervisor).
After doing qualitative research with questionnaire survey, individual depth interview, focus group discussion combining with triangulation to ensure the trustworthiness of the data. The data is analyzed with relational analysis and giving the results that most
of employees are not satisfied with their relationship with their supervisor and the interesting of work. Next, some of them are not satisfied with recognition, promotion, job security and working condition. There is only a really small number of employees are not satisfied with their salary because of misunderstanding about reality of the labor market of the industry and the purpose of salary policy of their company. Because unmet needs can convert into an internal drive that motivates specific behavior in an effort to fulfill the needs (Robert & Christopher, 2004), the company should fulfill all those needs to motivate its employee. However, the company ability
to satisfy those needs is limited by many constraints (e.g. finance and environment). The company can not satisfy all need at the same time. As a result, the priority of need satisfaction is created by find out the mode of unmet needs set; and the company can go through suggestions following each needs to satisfy its employees‟ needs.
Despite certain limitations, this study is hoped to contribute implications for Phuc
Tien company when they want to motivate their employees work better.
