Spondias cytherea fruit extracts were analyzed for chemical compositions, antioxidant and anti-diabetic activities. Two steroids, β-sitosterol and β-sitosteryl-3- β-D-O-glucopyranoside were isolated. Their structures were elucidated by spectral methods such as NMR, MS and compared with published data. These compounds and other extracts were tested for their antioxidant and inhibition of α- glucosidase activities. The DPPH method was used for determining the antioxidant activity and the alpha-glucosidase assay was used for evaluating the antidiabetic (type II) activity. The results showed that steroid β-sitosteryl-3-β-D-O- glucopyranoside could inhibit strongly the action of α-glucosidase enzyme with an IC50 value of 4.66 µg/ml but showed no antioxidant activity. Conversely, ethylacetate and methanol extracts with some fractions represented high action in antioxidant property but not express inhibition of α-glucosidase. Thus, different extracts from the Spondias cytherea fruit were demonstrated to contain either the anti-diabetic activity with potential application in the treatment of type 2 diabetes or antioxidant activity.
